Roy's philosophy

I feel privileged to be a photographer. To be able to interpret and to try and explain in my photographs my feelings about the world that surrounds me.

The everyday world can in turn be chaotic, mundane, wonderful and mysterious, and I find that using a camera provides me with almost endless opportunities to explore and create images in an individual way.

I have always worked in both colour and monochrome and enjoy the special characteristics of both mediums.

Broadly speaking, my favourite places for working are urban and coastal locations. I enjoy landscape too, but usually the less likely than the obviously attractive areas.

It has always seemed to me that interesting and compelling images can be found anywhere so long as you remain in a receptive state of mind, and that the first important thing about a photograph is that it should engage the curiosity of the viewer.

Images are also intriguing when they pose questions and do not offer an instant explanation.

Patience and anticipation are important qualities that I value when looking for pictures. You often have to wait around a bit and you often have to try and guess what might happen!

As my work shows, I like working in all kinds of weather conditions. Days that are dull or wet can so often be magical and atmospheric.

The work of other photographers has so often stimulated my thinking and Cartier-Bresson, Robert Frank, Lee Friedlander, William Eggleston and Raymond Moore have in their different ways, been an inspiration.
